A different canopic jar was used for each type of organ. The heart was left in the body as it was believed to be weighed in the afterlife to determine whether the person had lived a good life.
The Canopic jars depict Imsety (human head) protected the liver. Qebehsenuf (falcon head) guarded the intestines. Hapy (baboon head) protected the lungs. Duamatef (jackal head) guarded the stomach. The jars were then placed in a special casket. Canopic jar with the Imsety head lid
