Jade has been held in high esteem and thus value for centuries.  There are two main types of jade – nephrite and jadeite.  Whilst all jadeite is jade not all jade is jadeite.  Jade occurs in a range of colours which has been used to good advantage particularly in China.  Nephrite Jade comes from a range of places including Africa and the beautiful Maori Greenstone from New Zealand.  Jade is very hard and, therefore, hard to carve which makes the beautiful jade sculptures and other carved items even more astonishing.  The darker green jades tend to be ones from Africa and New Zealand. In part due to the potential value of good quality jade there are a number of other stones that are used either as they are or dyed or otherwise treated and passed off as jade.  One of the most commonly seen ones is the stone called ‘new jade’ which is actually serpentine.  However, others such as prehnite, aventurine and chrysoprase are also used in this way. 

The Chinese consider jade to be the most precious gem holding the five virtues – wisdom, justice modesty, courage, and purity and the five happinesses – wealth, old age, health, natural death and love of virtue.  The Maori also considered their jade to be symbolic of long life and fertility. 

Green jade is an excellent heart healing stone.  It is also supportive of your life force/chi .  It helps you to cherish your desires and facilitates the building of your dreams in this physical reality.  Jade also helps you to attune one to the needs of others.  Jade also helps the flow of energy through the physical body.

Marcasite has the same chemical composition as pyrite but is more brittle and slightly lighter.  It also does not form in the same cubic form.  The two are often confused but one way to tell them apart is that marcasite can create a spark when struck with iron or flint and it is this property that is the basis for its name.  The name marcasite came from the ancient Latin word ‘marcasita’ which in turn derived from Arabic and which means ‘fire stone’.  Marcasite is often found in older jewellery as it was extremely popular in the 18^th and 19^th centuries, particularly during the Victorian era.  However, much of the material in jewellery, particularly the more pieces, is in fact polished steel and not actually marcasite.  Real marcasite may tarnish to a more yellow colour particularly if it has been in contact with water.

Mochi balls balance the male and female energies within.  You use them in pairs and like Boji Stones there can be shapes attributed to male and female stones although this is not to evident as it is with the Boji Stones.  Mochi balls can align the energy centres, relieve energy blockages and provide protection.

Moldavite was formed by an meteorite crashing into the earth and impact turning the ground onto which it fell into tektite which is a natural glass. Some people suggest that moldavite is of extra-terrestrial origins but generally the meteorite theory is considered more likely. However the fact that it was created by a meteorite strike does add an extra-terrestrial element to the energy.  Tektites from various places have different appearances and properties but have all been formed in essentially the same way.  Moldavite comes from Czech Republic area.  As the prices of Moldavite have increased so the appearance of fake moldavite has also increased. The fakes have also become much more convincing so it is becoming increasingly difficult to pick them out.  As a simple rule of thumb if the natural looking rough piece (I think they look a bit like a leaf of Savoy cabbage) said to be moldavite look shiny on the surface it is most probably fake as real moldavite does not have a shiny surface.

It is quite difficult to come be and often Kambaba Jasper is misdescribed as Nebula Stone.

Nebula stone is so named as it looks like green nebula on a black background made from aegirine and feldspar with other trace minerals (not to be confused with kambaba jasper which is almost the reverse colouring green background with black ‘nebula’ and which is a completely different mineral)  Nebula stone was discovered in the desert in the American Southwest.    It is quite difficult to come be and often Kambaba Jasper is misdescribed as Nebula Stone.

Nebula stone can trigger the process of letting go of the old in order to make way for the new. As this process occurs, access to pure creative realms become available.  It allows you to let go of rigid thinking and beliefs that stop you from taking a wider perspective freeing the mind.    Nebula stone can assist you in moving forward on your spiritual path reminding you that you are indeed spirit in physical form.

Obsidian is a glassy, silica-rich volcanic rock.  The different proportions of minerals in addition to silica determine the colour of the obsidian.  I can produce top grade exceptionally sharp cutting implements including surgical instruments.  Blades have a smooth edge down to even one atom thick unlike steel which has a slightly jagged edge under high magnification.  It is used for arrow heads and has been since antiquity.  It goes without saying, therefore, to be careful handling rough obsidian as it will be sharp!  There are a number of different types of obsidian detailed here.  Most natural obsidian is black with colour flash or inclusions with the exception of natural green obsidian which is still quite dark, the clear blue/green version sold as blue obsidian is manmade glass as is much material sold as green obsidian.

Opal forms in many colours and types although the forms with the flash are probably the most well-known.  The composition is sub-microscopic silica spheres bonded with water and extra silica.  This is the reason for its association with bad luck.  The water within the stone can expand and contract with temperature and this can cause the opal to break, hence the bad reputation.  The stone can also dry out and fall out of jewellery settings.
